lactose intolerance and depression

I know of three people, namely myself, a very good friend, and my father, who all had adult-onset lactose intolerance AND depression.

I'm just wondering if there's any correlation between the two. I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has to deal with it too.

For that matter is there any literature/studies that has investigated/documented this?

Lactose intolerance is pretty common in adults. Check out this page for some statistics

I've never heard of a link with depression.

Had no idea until it's onset with me in the last two years what it even really was, and that article has made me aware of just how darned common it really is.

Happened to me, too. I had always been fine with milk, until sometime in my 30s. My tummy was bloated for years before I figured out what was going on. Now I drink lactose-free milk. I wish they made lactose-free cottage cheese, but I've never seen any.

I've sworn off fluid milk entirely. The more processed the product, the easier it for me - cheeses are mostly okay (like cheddar or havarti) but ice cream and yogurt are out.

The lactase pills sometimes help, but sometimes they don't so I don't even risk it mostly.

I've learned to appreciate soy beverages. The lactose free milks don't appeal taste-wise anymore, for some odd reason. I suspect it's because I now equate fluid milk with pain, upset and unbearable consequences for a few hours afterwards... Pavlovian dog that I am.
