Ready to start living

Posted by Wantalife on May 25, 2004, at 9:15:25

I've just discovered your site. I've been drinking for alot of years and realize how alone I am. I am attempting to detox myself and going through the flu-like symptoms. Is it physically dangerous for me to try to do this on my own. I'm a working alcoholic with a 12-pack of beer a day habit. I'm really tired. Can you give me some insight on how best to succeed? Thanks and looking to hear from you.

Welcome to Babble! I'm an alcoholic too and I detoxed myself at home. I'd say it was all done in about 4 weeks, and I was plenty miserable. The main danger in a do-it-yourself detox is seizures. It is best if you aren't alone during the process (although I was and did not suffer any seizures). I had a 20-year old habit. And believe it or not, my liver function is good. We have a board here called Substance where you'll find other people like us. It isn't so surprising to find that depression and alcoholism are often found together in people.

I really like your posting name!

Welcome! I am also an alcoholic, but did detox at a treatment center. I would say to hang around and post as often as you feel up to it. You should definitely have a few people close by that you can call upon if possible if things get too scary. You are definitely not alone in your experience. There are a ton of us that have been down the alcohol and addiction road. The 12 step programs worked for me but everyone is different. They are, however, a good way to establish a support group of people that can relate to what you are going through and are close by in case of a weak or lonely or scary moment.

Good luck to you, you can do it...it does get better...I promise. :)
