To Dr. Bob: Suggestions for the next page remodel

Posted by medlib on October 2, 2000, at 18:50:43

Dr. Bob--

Next time you modify the Babbles, could you consider:

--adding links to the other Babbles on each bottom-of-the-page links menu? Top-of-the-page links would be nice, too.

--adding a reminder to single-click just above the "confirm post" button? It might be helpful to bold the reminder and include (in regular type) "double-clicking leads to double-posting."

Many thanks for all your continuing efforts.--medlib

Do you mean the main pages, with the lists of posts, or the pages with the posts themselves?

Do you think that's what's happening??? It never crossed my mind!

Thanks for the suggestions. Now here's a question for you. Psycho-Babble Jr. hasn't taken off. Do you think it's because people think you have to be a kid to post there? Maybe I should call it Psycho-Babble for Parents or something like that?

Dr. Bob--

Thanks for your prompy reply. Clarifications/answers below:

I meant just the other main pages. For those of us who go to more than one page per session (which is most, from what I can tell), links at the top and bottom to the other main pages would make navigation easier.

Oh, yeah. Try it! (For realism's sake, use a deliberate, firm, but not excessively slow click speed.) Unlike us, you can remove a double post. In my experience, double-clicking Internet newbies usually aren't a big problem; but, depending on their click speed, they sometimes print twice (inevitably, a whole 40-page site) or they go "Back" 2 pages and get lost. (I always recommend changing the mouse setting to single-click for everything--makes segueing to the Internet seamless.)

I don't think that a name change would help much.
My take is that a 3-way split of the original Babble was too much too soon. I would have divided it only into med and non-med. I went to PB Jr. for the first time this week; my children are grown and I don't yet have grandchildren, so kids aren't a current interest for me. However, if I ran across a query about a kid issue on a general board, and I knew something about the topic from my experience or education, chances are I might post to it. I'd return junior to the adult worlds. You could still split it off later as PSB traffic takes off.

Well wishes--medlib

Dr.Bob,

Just a thought here but a lot of parents have children with depression, but don't have it themselves. Perhaps they think of Psycho Babble as a site that is exclusively for people with the dis-ease. Maybe you could create a searchable link that explains what the site is all about pointing out that having depression yourself is not a pre-requisite to using the page, or even perhaps give it an entirely different name altogether. You could still link it to your homepage.

You could have a contest to name the new site with the winner getting a year's free subscription to Psycho Babble... Oh wait, never mind... ;^)

OK, that makes sense. There already are links near the top, after the introduction, but adding them at the bottom is a good idea.

Hmm, you're probably right, I got too carried away. I should've remembered that old saying, one board at a time. :-)

How about if you list the discussions in reverse order;
most recent posts at the top of the listing. That way I
wouldn't have to scroll past all of the old posts every
time I check the list. (Yes, I'm incredibly lazy.)

Well, if you scroll past the old posts, one might catch your eye (and might even have to do with what you were going to post yourself :-).
