Tai Chi

Posted by NikkiT2 on May 3, 2003, at 9:43:06

I'm thinking of joining a Tai Chi class at the beginning of June (I got on holiday for 2 weeks in 2 weeks time, so want to wait till I return from that)

I am *really* unfit, and can't afford gym fee's.. I am trying to walk for 30 mins a day, but I live in Central London, and wlaking around streets of houses and shops really isn't very exciting!!
So I was thinking Tai Chi would be a nice easy exercise to do till I get my fitness levels up a bit more. Plus, I've heard really good things about his holistic benefits.
And I have *terrible* posture, and am starting to get a buffolo hump (well, its already quite noticable, and while I am over weight I don't think that can be the only cause of it. And I'm only 28).. I thought of other martial arts to help this, but our local Karate class in mainly made up on 6 year olds, and I don't feel fit enough for anything like that.

Anyone have any good / negative comments to make on Tai Chi?? I've only heard good things, and as I don't have much money to spare, I don't want to waste it.

Thanks all

Nikki x

Hi Nikki- I saw your post last week and then poof! it was gone and I never responded to it. I remembered it this morning when i was doing Yoga. My God, is this board that much a part of my life?? Eek.

>in Central London,
Oh cry me a river! i would love to live in London...but I know what you're saying. lately I want to work out inside even though it's "nice" out because I'm so self-conscious. Pretty bad, huh? Kind of a double-edged sword.

I wish I knew more about TC and was actually just on the verge of getting a video or taking a class. I don't know if you'd be in to trying a video, but it's a nice inexpensive way to get a good work out and try out a huge variety of exercise types without taking a class. I like http://www.collagevideo.com. They have a great selection and reviews from professionals as well as people that have actually done the video. you can even watch a clip of each one.

Hmmm, if you have a "buffalo hump" as you put it, even when you try to stand up really straight, let your doc have a looksee at that. Just to make sure it's posture, not osteoporosis. For posture, Yoga and Pilates have helped me tremendously. I'm new to both of them but want to get more in to Pilates. But I imagine that TC would be great fot that too. Targeting your abs also really helps your posture. On my Pilates for Abs tape, Kathy Smith is the instructor and she describes specificall and repeatedly the positioning of your body that you need to concentrate on during the moves. Well I've found that now, throughout the day, i'm using them too. No one can SEE them; I don't look like a freak or anything. Well, I do...but for other reasons. Anyway, i have a post-it stuck right here in front of me on the monitor that says, "powerhouse", which is what Kathy calls the combination of optimal positioning for posture. Shoulders back and down, as far away from your ears as you can get 'em, ribcage knitted...etc. A lot to think about at first but it becomes 2nd nature.

I'd love to take a class too! And I have never heard a bad thing about it either. in fact most people seem to get hooked and become very dedicated to it because if the positive results.

Good luck- lemme know how it is!
Karen
