I'm curious--don't know what triptans is. I have a friend who has had intense headaches his entire life and been to every specialist available. Currently he's going to a pain clinic to rule out every possible secondary condition-which I think they have-and then get him on some kind of pain protocol. They were last focusing on regulating his sleep (with Trazadone), and also gave him some new pain reliever he said did absolutely nothing.I'd love to give him a lead if you have one...

If he's been going to that many specialists, I'm sure they've tried triptans. Imitrex is one. They're selective 5-HT1 serotonin reuptake agonists, so if he's on an SSRI they don't let you take them (possible serotonin syndrome?).
It's been great for me though. I never realized before how little relief I actually got. I considered that my OTC medication worked if the headache got better enough that I could function. It wasn't until I took Frova during a really bad attack, complete with aura, that I realized how little I had been settling for. The Frova even helped with the non-headache part of the migraine. It hadn't even occurred to me.
So stubborn insistence on not taking the heavy drugs has cost me a lot over the last ten years or so. :)

Oh! He said they gave him a new medication called 'Favor', but I'm sure he must have meant Frova. No wonder I couldn't find it anywhere when I looked it up.. So I guess that's like Imitrex? In any event it didn't help him. Poor guy.
